This two to four player abstract strategy game is simple to learn, yet packed with plenty of variety. Players score five points each time they make an X, Plus, or Five-in-a-row pattern with five of their X pieces. The five X pieces that make the pattern are replaced with five flat markers which represent a player's points. Player's points do not block the spaces they occupy, so if an opponent makes a pattern over any existing point/flat marker, that point is cancelled. Rarely does a player get discouraged, because in most games it is a neck and neck race to be the first to reach the established number of points to win. 2 players 15, 3 players 12, and 4 players/teams 10 points wins. MOD X also offers the option of using any of the five Wild X pieces that start each game to make patterns. A wild piece does not score when part of a pattern, but rather has the power of being replaced anywhere on the game board to set the player up for a future pattern. There is even the option of an instant win, which is much like a checkmate in Chess. An instant win happens when one of the three patterns is made with all five Wild X Pieces, which is another fun way to win.
